Imagine you want to reduce your production costs. You decide to standardize production by switching to modular furniture. This way, with just a few custom products, you can offer an unlimited number of combinations. It seems like all the problems with production, storage, and personalization are solved.
BUT... then you realize you have no way of showing the client their future piece of furniture.
You try a photo session, knowing the downside. A photo doesn’t capture even 1% of the possibilities offered by modular furniture.
You’re back to square one. Your client sees the photo and then calls, asking, "Can you please personalize it for me?" This isn't where you wanted to be, right? Why is it like that?
Many tools for selling modular furniture online are discouraging. Recognizing the potential, we used our experience in 3D and UX to design the perfect configurator for modular sofas.
With complex custom products like modular furniture, simplicity and ease of use are key. We made a bold move and gave up on 3D display, contrary to current trends.
The owners of one of Poland's largest sofa companies planned to reduce production costs by introducing modular products. They chose the best Italian fabrics and offered unlimited combinations with just five different modules. It had to work.
Yet, sales of modular sofas stalled.
The sales method was the issue. In the online store, each module was a separate product with its own tab. Customers had to check dimensions across tabs and manually draw their sofa layout. They needed a good spatial imagination to visualize the final product in their home.
We needed to simplify this process into one easy-to-use tool. The modular configurator, placing a sofa on an isometric board with ready-made bricks, was the perfect solution.
Users could access all modules in one place, see their custom product in real-time, and view current pricing. After choosing the fabric and color, they could add the whole set to the cart with one click.
The process became so simple that most customers could do it themselves. The configurator also became a tool for sales staff and physical stores, reducing the time to create an offer by three times.
Despite ScandicSofa using the Shoper platform, a SaaS e-commerce solution with limited customization options, we successfully integrated the tool, ensuring seamless functionality and a superior user experience.
We developed a simple, unconventional solution for furniture brands to sell modular products. While the British branch of Ikea pioneered this, we were the first to offer modular, isometric configurators as an affordable service at a relatively low price.
The modular sofa configurator is gaining popularity, and our AR-Range team is working on adding online augmented reality to enhance it further.
